YouTubeYouTube Previews New Feature to Help Creators Interact with Top Fans (SocialTimes)
Wednesday afternoon at VidCon, YouTube previewed a new feature called Top Fans that sounds like it’s going to revolutionize the way that YouTube creators engage with their fans. The feature will make it easier for creators to engage with their most influential and engaged fans, as well as glean demographics about these fans to aid in potential collaborations and beyond. Forbes YouTube has been around for a while, but it’s finally becoming the transformational platform everyone thought it could and would become. Until recently, brands and businesses have written off the medium as a place for teenagers to film short, quirky, and often nonsensical short form videos. AdAge “The biggest threat to YouTube is Amazon,” said Mark Suster, partner at Los Angeles-based venture capital firm Upfront Ventures, during a keynote presentation Thursday morning at VidCon. Suster said he’s discussed Amazon’s position to rival YouTube with top executives at the e-commerce giant. “I’ve had this discussion [with people] one level below the CEO [Jeff Bezos],” he said. “They get it, but they just have other priorities right now.” The Verge The National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences said Thursday that the Google-owned video service has won a technical Emmy for its personalized video recommendations. The Emmy honors the computer science that powers YouTube’s recommendation algorithm, which suggests clips to watch based on a person’s viewing history, popular videos, and other signals. Slate.com On Monday, Claire Danes told the Television Critics Association that when she is preparing to enter the chemically imbalanced mind of Carrie Mathison, she consults books about bipolar disorder, but she also fires up YouTube: “People who have this condition, bipolar, are often up late at night and have a lot of energy and a desire to talk and no one to talk to, so they talk to the camera and that’s always very useful.” But YouTube is especially helpful to actors cast to play characters who really existed.

CNET A Facebook spokesperson told CNET that, with the update, users can quickly unlock their screens to access the camera and messages from Cover Feed on Facebook for Android. “Cover Feed has been a popular element of the Home experience, and making it available from the Facebook Android app makes it accessible for more people,” the spokesperson said. The Next Web Cover Feeds were introduced by Facebook back when CEO Mark Zuckerberg revealed Home. It’s very Flipboard-like in that users can see status updates from their friends within the full confines of the mobile device’s screen.

In what might be Medium‘s first widespread Twitter moment, music writer Michele Catalano used the platform to blog details of an unexpected visit to her home Wednesday, from six men she identifies as members of the “joint terrorism task force.” Catalano asserts that the visit was likely prompted by her husband searching for the term “backpacks” in close conjunction with her searching for the term “pressure cookers” and her son reading the news.
